Race Day Gear
I'm leaving in an hour to drive to Tucson for my half marathon tomorrow. I can't believe what a hard time I'm having deciding what to wear! My husband thinks it's hilarious, he doesn't understand why I don't just throw in any old shorts and a tee shirt. I don't know why he doesn't realize how many factors there are to consider...what if it's warm, what if it's cold, will I have chafing, did I shave my legs, do I need a pocket for my energy gel, does my ipod clip work with these shorts, do these socks bunch up, do these panties give me a wedgie and the all important how will I look in the race day pics? I think I've finally chosen my old stand-bys; my favorite loose shorts with the elastic coming out of the waist (good thing for the draw string) and a short sleeve VERY faded black technical tee shirt. If it's cold I'll add my fleece vest. I guess I obviously decided I don't care how I will look in the race pictures. :) Do any of the rest of you have these problems, or is just me wasting time on all this?

I haven't raced enough to worry much about it but I will or sure be thinking about it if we get picked for St. George. I'll probably end up doing as you do and choose my old favorites ... and hope to avoid too many pictures.
ReplyDeleteCynthia - I was thinking about you this morning as I was getting my boys' breakfast and looking out the kitchen window. The wind was howling and blowing in quite a storm. Hope your weather there was much, much better and you had a great race! Can't wait to hear about it.
ReplyDeleteFor my race day, I always go with what I've been wearing during my long runs. Won't have to worry about chafing, socks bunching or wedgies because everything's been tried and tested!
I think that we Women generally do put allot more thought into these things. Like Marcie, I stick to stuff Ive been wearing for lead-up runs. But like Cynthia, I spend some significant time stressing the night before. Going over and over my mental list. Do I have all my gear. Is everything ready to go? Is there something I wont be able to find in the morning?
ReplyDeleteFor the race today I made a rookie mistake, luckily I don't think it affected my time at all.
ReplyDeleteWhen I got to the packet pickup I really liked the nice technical tee they gave me so I decided to wear it (as did LOTS of other so that was fun.) Anyways, the sports bra I had brought didn't work with a tech fabric tee, they stuck to each other. So we happened to be going to a movie right by a Dick's Sporting Goods and I ran in and bought a new slick bra. During the race it was quite comfy, no problems, but when I took it off there was some chafing down under... Funny. Now that I think about it I'm probably lucky it wasn't a lot worse. :)
My husband, Tim (ex-triathlete), always harps on me when I even think about doing something new on race day..."If you haven't practiced with it, don't do it." So far he's been right every time. If I've stepped out of that mindset it usually goes awry. As long as I've used whatever it is before and if I've slathered myself in Bodyglide and sunblock I'm good to go (as far as skipping any wardrobe malfunctions)!
